Dorfromantik: The Board Game from Michael Palm, Lukas Zach, and Pegasus Spiele has won the 2023 Spiel des Jahres — Germany’s “game of the year” award — beating out the other two nominees: Fun Facts and Next Station: London.
The Spiel des Jahres jury also chose Challengers! from Johannes Krenner, Markus Slawitscheck, and 1 More Time Games and Z-Man Games as the 2023 Kennerspiel des Jahres (KedJ) over nominees Iki and Planet Unknown. (The “Kennerspiel” awards an “enthusiast’s game”, that is, a game appropriate for those familiar with SdJ-level games.)
The separate Kinderspiel des Jahres (children’s game of the year) jury named Mysterium Kids: Captain Echo’s Treasure from Antonin Boccara, Yves Hirschfeld, Libellud, and Space Cow as the 2023 Kinderspiel winner over Carla Caramel and Gigamon.
The award ceremony started with a tribute to designer Klaus Teuber, four-time winner of the Spiel des Jahres for Barbarossa, Adel Verpflichtet, Drunter & Drüber, and CATAN who passed away on April 1, 2023.
