The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG)
The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) is a collectible card game based on the popular Pokémon video game series. Originally launched in Japan in 1996 and internationally in 1999, the TCG allows players to build decks and battle using cards that represent Pokémon, items, and trainers from the Pokémon universe.
In the game, players assume the role of Pokémon Trainers who use their Pokémon to battle each other. The goal is to “knock out” opposing Pokémon and collect Prize cards—once a player has taken all of their Prize cards, they win the game. Battles revolve around strategic use of cards, careful deck building, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of different Pokémon types.
Cards fall into three main categories:
- Pokémon cards, which represent creatures used in battle.
- Trainer cards, which provide helpful effects or allow players to manipulate the game in various ways.
- Energy cards, which are used to power a Pokémon’s attacks.
The game is both accessible to beginners and deep enough for competitive play, with a worldwide community of players and official tournaments held regularly. New sets are released multiple times each year, introducing new mechanics, artwork, and strategies to keep the game fresh and engaging.
Whether you’re a collector, a casual player, or a competitive battler, the Pokémon TCG offers a fun and dynamic way to experience the world of Pokémon.
