Almost Time to Party (Game) at SPIEL ’22

by W. Eric Martin

Awaiting the 2D cover…• Belgian publisher Repos Production has announced a new title in its co-operative party game line, a line that previously consisted of So Clover! and Spiel des Jahres winner Just One, a line that I didn’t realize was a line, although perhaps it gained line status only thanks to the announcement of this third title: Fun Facts, a game for 4-8 players from Kasper Lapp.

Here’s how it works:

Each round in Fun Facts, a question is placed in the center of the table, e.g., “How long is the perfect nap?”, then everyone secretly writes their answer on their colored arrow and places that arrow face down on the table. (You write your name on the other side of the arrow so that everyone knows which arrow is whose.)

Once everyone has written their answer, take turns placing your arrow in relation to the other players from low to high: “I know that Mom is super sleepy, so I should definitely place my arrow below hers.” After everyone has placed their answer in the center of the table, you have the opportunity to move your own arrow — without touching anyone else’s!

Once everyone is satisfied, reveal everyone’s numbers, then remove each arrow that is out of order. Each remaining arrow represents a correct answer and provides 1 point for the entire team. After eight rounds, record the team’s score in the Record of Legends. Can you possibly achieve a perfect score?

• In January 2020, Lincoln Damerst and I attended the Spielwarenmesse trade fair and recorded an overview of a Silvano Sorrentino design then titled “Movie Night”. Over the course of the Covid pandemic, Sorrentino and publisher dV Giochi continued testing and developing the game, with the co-operative variant eventually becoming the default mode in which to play the game.

Here’s how to play this 2-7 player game that will be available for demo at SPIEL ’22 ahead of its November 2022 release date:

In Not That Movie!, you’re trying to choose the “right” movie to watch with your group based only on a couple of short reviews.

To set up the round, lay out ten cards to create eight unique movie titles (see image), then reveal two review cards, then secretly choose the one movie you feel best matches these reviews.

Demo round at Gen Con 2022

Each player in turn places a “not” token on a movie that they think no one chose. Each correctly placed token scores 1 point; if you not a movie that players chose, they reveal their selection dial, and so long as not all dials are revealed, you keep going. If you make no mistakes, you score bonus points. After five rounds, tally your score, ideally hitting the maximum of 40 points.

• Ukranian publisher IGAMES has a co-operative party game of its own from Mysterium co-designer Oleksandr Nevskiy: Oneironauts, a 2-6 player game that seems to channel the same spirit as these other two games — thinking along the same lines and not screwing up.

Here’s how it works:

Welcome to the Oneironauts dive center! This is where your journey through the dream ocean will begin!

In Oneironauts, all players play as one team. The game lasts a certain number of rounds. At the start of each round, take the top word card and place it face up. Each player chooses from their dream cards the one that matches the word on the card the best, then these cards are shuffled together with a random card before they’re all revealed. Finally, all players simultaneously try to guess the card that was accidentally added. For each correct answer, the team scores 1 sheep.

Players win if they collect 15 or more sheep before they run out of elixir; otherwise they lose.
