Flotilla is a unique strategy board game that merges two distinct phases of gameplay—exploration and economic development—into a seamless experience. Released in 2019 by WizKids, it takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a global disaster has submerged most of the Earth’s surface. Players take on the role of captains leading a flotilla of survivors, gathering resources, expanding their fleets, and trying to build a thriving community on the water.
The game is built around a dual-mode system. In the Sinksider phase, players explore the depths of the ocean, diving for resources like food, water, and valuable artifacts while battling underwater dangers. This phase involves heavy exploration and risk-taking, as players must decide when and how to venture out to gather these essential items.
At some point in the game, players have the option to transition to the Skyside phase. Here, the focus shifts to economic and city-building gameplay. The resources collected during the Sinksider phase are now used to construct flotilla segments, expand the community, and develop new technologies. Choosing when to make this switch is one of the game’s most critical decisions, as it can heavily influence the endgame strategy.
Flotilla features several dynamic systems, including fluctuating markets, where the value of resources changes based on supply and demand, and modular board components, meaning no two games will ever play out exactly the same. It supports 3 to 5 players, and a single game can take between 90 and 150 minutes.
